The Two Faces of Anxiety

We can quickly train your brain to process things differently. Yes, people can have more than one type of anxiety. We call the first type stress and often use the term anxiety interchangeably. This type is all about how we deal with things in the here and now. These incidents are triggered by current events that cause us to feel upset. They can be issues with your kids or spouse, financial pressures, uncomfortable social situations, work overload or high-pressure deadlines. Each person has their own typical response to these kinds of pressures, and you might not be totally happy with your “automatic” response. When looking for a different response for this type of stress, we can teach our brains very quickly to choose the path of staying centered. We go into your best problem solving state. You can probably think of someone who can keep their cool no matter what’s going on. They can step back, assess and problem solve. That is the type of state we will help you find. The second type of anxiety is a result of hanging on to upsetting events from the past. These can be traumatic events like childhood trauma, car crashes, physical harm or experiences from the battlefield. These can turn on your fight-of-flight response and can get stuck there. There is a way to intentionally turn this response off. We look at the way you represent those events in your mind and quickly recode them. By doing so, your fight-or-flight response gets turned off. Typically, my clients feel an immediate release from their former uncomfortable feelings, and they experience it as a very welcome and permanent change. At that point, we establish how they want to feel on a baseline level. Within a matter of minutes, that new state is trained into their nervous system so this preferred state is the new auto-response of the future.

You can be free from anxiety

Everyone has trauma. Not everyone has trauma that arises from intentional abuse. Sometimes we have trauma from car accidents, having a friend dunking us to long in a swimming pool as a kid, being thrown from a horse as a teenager and other various types of things. Some of us do have trauma from far worse and intential types of abuse. There are many people who have suffered child abuse, both physically and mentally. Quite often those things carry forward and a person experiences the type of anxiety I am talking about. People that experience anxiety in this way do not generally attribute it to those traumatic events. They will usually report that they have alway been anxious, or that they are an anxious type of person. The initial trauma events are so long ago for some they see no connection between the trauma and the anxiety. When we experience trauma it turns on the fight or flight system and often it does not get turned back off. One can walk around through life experiencing these things just below the conscious level.

Through hypnosis I am able to assist those experiencing even very high levels of anxiety retrain what their habits of thinking and feeling. I very often have clients find that in the first or second session they experience more peace in quiet in their minds than they have in years.

Changing the way humans behave

As humans, we have the capacity to change in powerful and dramatic ways. People change deeply and profoundly all of the time. Life altering events change us forever. The passing of a grandparent or a parent changes the way that we see life. In some ways, it seems as if we’ve been convinced that we can’t powerfully change in a way that is five times better than what we are doing now. Why is that?

As a hypnotist, I have to tell you that I witness people changing in really neat ways. I have seen timid fourteen-year-old girls turn into social tigers, or tigers on the soccer field. I have watched women with forty years’ worth of anxiety watch it go up in smoke in a matter of a few minutes. A client of mine went from a very poor sales closing ratio to closing almost all of his sales calls. I have seen people dramatically alter their baseline moods.

Demystifying hypnosis

I myself am very comfortable with hypnosis. I see the value of it where it is applied. I see how people are conditioned, and the effect that some arbitrary, unintentional hypnosis changes and shapes people. I am so immersed in it that I can sometimes overlook the fact that there are a lot of people that still see hypnosis as some kind of hocus pocus.

First of all, I want to let you know that anyone can be hypnotized. Last night when you fell asleep, the time that you were not quite awake and yet not quite asleep, and when you awoke, that time when you were not quite asleep anymore, yet not quite awake, are called the hypnopompic and hypnagogic states. These two states are identical brain wave states to formal hypnosis. Outside of the physiological states, there are many examples in your life where you have changed your mind about something, dramatically changed a rigid opinion or just got sick of a situation in a way that when you looked at it the last time you were just through with it. It just so happens that we can capture that process and make it very pointed and purposefully direct the change. We really are change machines; we are always changing.

The question is: now that we know that we can be hypnotized and that we can easily create change, what do we change, or more pertinent, what can be changed? My response to that is: any behavior that you desire. As a matter of fact, I think that people are not nearly greedy enough when they are asking themselves to do better and feel better. I have worked with little kids wetting the bed to adults with severe, debilitating PTSD.

Everyday nagging feelings that, if eliminated and replaced with a better feeling, would really increase your pleasure in life, are some of the things to target. Examples are: increasing your sales, golf score, ability to breakthrough to the next level in ballroom dancing, creating more patience with your family, getting over jealousy, forgiving a parent that is deceased or not. If you are working nights and having a hard time sleeping during the day, we can enhance that situation as well. As you can see, the only limit on what you can do with hypnosis is your imagination.

How do you quit?

As a former two pack a day smoker I understand what it is like to feel hopelessly addicted to cigarettes. I had one burning in the ashtray while lighting another one, all the while knowing that the chances of me becoming very ill were pretty high. As you know, knowledge will not do a lot for you when it comes to quitting. Some fundamental and powerful changes have to happen to make quitting start to be a possibility. The power that the cigarette habit has, seems mysterious, elusive and unbeatable. I quit using hypnosis and so can you.

Do you or someone you know struggle to control pain?

Hypnosis can be effectively utilized to assist in controlling pain. Before the advent of modern chemical anesthesia, hypnosis was used to turn off pain signals while surgery was performed. Pain is there for a purpose. One must still attend to whatever the pain is communicating is wrong, but once you are aware of the problem the signal is no longer needed. Can I be hypnotized?

I always run into someone that says that they can’t be hypnotized. I believe what they are really saying to me is that they cannot be tranced out in thirty seconds and made to do something embarrassing, like they saw happen to their friend at a hypnosis comedy show. Really what they are saying to me is that they cannot focus, relax, change their attention onto the inside enough that they can change their mind about something, or learn to do something new. You go right through the hypnotic state on your way to sleep and the way back out, that is twice today that you have been in hypnosis. Some gal I met was so determined that she couldn’t be hypnotized, that when I told her that she said she didn’t sleep either. People cling to their ignorance sometimes like it is a life raft. There is plenty of stigmatism around hypnosis, I really wish that I could come up with a whole new word about what I do. We have come such a long with with brain science, we can map exactly what is going on with the brain when we go into hypnotic states. For most of us we don’t have a brain, we have two brains. When hypnosis is induced the right creative side of the brain becomes much more active and talks to the left brain much more through the connector the corpus callosum. Also what is happening is we shut down the part of the brain that is highly critical of new information. Some people have that highly critical part working overtime when I am talking about hypnosis, they are inside thinking about all the crazy things that they think hypnosis is and they won’t listen to any facts about it no matter what. They are in effect in a trance of their own. Fortunately I find most people are open minded. When the critical faculty is turned off we can suggest things to the mind and they are taken in as truth and can be taken on as a new reality. I often help people retrain their mind to engage in the activity of being a non smoker, I eradicate the cravings, and if you have ever been addicted to cigarettes you know how big that is.

Heres for the people that say that don’t believe in hypnosis. Hypnosis has been used for about three hundred years to do pain control. It is done well enough that people can have surgery without any anesthesia. Some one told me couldn’t be true, well in that case you have to believe that the American Journal of Clinical Psychology doesn’t exist either because it is documented there and plenty of other places.

I really wish I had a way to effectively communicate how many different things can be done with hypnosis and some of the other whole brain techniques I use, and by the way anything I do in hypnosis I have ways to do them in the waking state. I can eliminate phobias in about ten minutes, I can get complete relief from post traumatic stress disorder in under a half an hour, I can relieve cigarette addictions, I can relieve traumatic memories in under fifteen minutes. The fact of the matter is you will remember these things, I just know how to drain the horrible feelings out of them. I can help you structure your belief system in such a way that everything you do well now you can do far better. If you have a core idea that you are only worth seventy five thousand a year, well guess what, you will not exceed that on a consistent basis.

I often have people ask me to do stage shows. I am really not interested in showing people that they can be made a fool out of by doing silly stuff in hypnosis. There are so many people that are stuck, that are in pain, that are engaged in behaviors they don’t seem to have much of a choice about and lots of other things that can so easily be changed. I truly want to keep this great way of changing people in a good light, in a serious light and in a professional light. Hypnosis has a lot to offer a society that is plagued with so many different things.

Hypnosis doesn’t always have to be remedial. We can take many things that you are already doing well and improve and perfect them. I have worked with professional boxers, olympic hopefuls and highly successful sales people. I have taken martial arts for almost 30 years. In martial arts you are always perfecting and honing your technique. I personally don’t understand people that are done with themselves. I take that philosophy into my personal life. I always want to be a better father, a better mate, a better person and especially better at helping people get better at what they want to do.

I would really love to convey to you today all of the really cool things that we can do with hypnosis. I would like to list a few of those things now to expand your idea of hypnosis beyond treating smoking habits and weight loss. Heres some of what we can do. We can put people into hypnosis and have them feel music kinesthetically, it is a really powerful and moving experience. We can help people read at many times the rate they normally read, we can help them economize their study habits, introduce fun feelings into learning and increase their ability to recall and use the information that they have learned. We can help people increase their creativity. We can do pain control so effectively we can do amputations without anesthesia and control the bleeding to boot. I have not personally done it but I saw another hypnotist work with someone who was stuck in between two sexual preferences, pick one and be happy with it. I have worked with people scared to death to go on stage and saw them go from that to being as comfortable as talking with friends in there living room with confidence, charisma, and express a good sense of humor and warmth at the same time. Lets not fail to mention the many people that have used hypnosis to take some strokes off of their golf game.

When it comes to what can be done with hypnosis, your imagination is the limit. Any way of being or mental process can be improved. Farewell for now and I hope that the trances you have are pleasant and useful. May you find the love trance, the wealth trance and the happy trance.
